Travel Itch

So it's been 5 mo. since I left the country and I'm itching to travel again. This is bad. I don't, I don't, I don't want to be a person who travels till their broke and then gets a job just long enough to save for a trip. Buuuuut, there area lot of places I want to see and cultures I want to experience. If I buckle down, work some overtime, and don't buy anything extravagant I can do a trip next spring. I can't decide where to go though. Paces that come to mind are:

Volunteer work in Africa. A safari would be cool but I'd like to do some sort of relief work if I'm going there. The problem with that is I'd want to stay for more than just two weeks and the problem with that is I have a job. Pros: Helping a good cause, seeing Africa. Cons: Can't stay long, may die.

Middle East. Donno where yet, probably Israel and Jordan. I'm really interested in the middle east and I'd love to see some of the places in the bible. I'd have to do with a group since I don't speak Arabic so that costs a little bit too. Pros: Great history, I'm interested in the people and culture. Cons: Could die, more expensive.

Pacific Islands. I still know three people who live in Taiwan and Indonesia so I could go visit them. Pros: I'd have free tour guides and get to see friends I haven't seen in a while. Cons: I'd have to go sooner than I plan.

Hmmm. Asia? Maybe. I have some interesting Europe trips in my mind too but I want to try out some other continents first.

Any advice for me you well traveled blog readers????

I'm coming if you go to any of those places.

Thats all I know.

Actually, aren't we supposed to travel at this stage in life? Thats what everyone tells me.

You won't die in Africa. Unless you die of a car crash or plane crash b/c they are crazy with their vehicles over there. Other than that - they usually don't kill white people. Sad, this I know. Go to Africa.

If you go to the Middle East - you may have to pick either Jordan or Isreal. I know that if you go to Isreal they won't let you into most Arabic countries. I don't know if it's the same vice versa.

Also: You should take "die" off of all your con lists. You could say the same thing about traveling to Iowa.

Hong Kong is incredibly fantastic. It's a very modern mix of Asia and Europe. I went there in '99 and it was easy to get around as an English speaker because they used to be part of the British empire. The scenery is great and there's a lot you can do. I occasionally see marked down flights there through NWA.

Vancouver, British Columbia is actually very similar to Hong Kong. Just more of a Western influence. It's also much cheaper all around. Vancouver is a really global city with an interesting mix of really strong cultures -- especially Asian, Italian and Iranian. Lots of movies and tv shows are filmed there and the scenery is phenominal. Plus they have great skiing and funny money.

Okay. So. That anonymous comment was me. I accidentally hit Enter and it posted before I could sign my name. :) I figured you might know it was me anyway...

I probably won't go anywhere I would die. I mean no disprespect to the culture but there are definitly places in the middle east, asia, and africa I could go and have a good chance of getting killed. I could say the same about south chicago.

Thanks for the tips Sarah :)

You know, more people die in their kitchens than anywhere else. So perhaps you should never make food or wash dishes again either. :)

I don't make food or wash dishes. I let other people do that for me. Then I pay them. It's a trickle down economy. Thank Reagan I'm helping the poor!
